McMahon Hall Dormies use Chuck Nelson to again win University of Washington Sign Contest
In 1981, a group of McMahon Hall dormies won the University of Washington
Sign Contest at the Annual Homecoming game using
The Coppertone Girl. After our succuss at beating
the Greeks at their own sign contest, we decided to give it a shot again
the following year. While we considered unveiling the Coppertone Girl again,
we thought that would be a bit tacky and figured we could do it without
resorting to blatent sexism. So we came up with a clever sign using
Chuck Nelson, who was a record-setting kicker for the football team.
Once again, this event was sponsored by the Greek System, and they were
not too happy about some "Dormies" participating in their event (which was
advertised as open to all) ... and despite their efforts to "pooh-pooh" us,
we again emerged victorious. This really was a clever sign and Chuck Nelson
had an unbroken string of field goals going. It also helped we were the only
Dorm entry, as we really played that up and so therefore got 100% of that
vote/yells, whereas the various Greek entries splintered those entries.
I guess there is politics even in sign contests! ;-)
BTW, we "retired" after this - winning two years running was enough for us
and we wanted to go out on top.
