Rafting Pistol Creek Rapids on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River
At mile marker 21.9 is Pistol Creek Rapids which has some interesting history.
On July 24th, 2006, there was a highly localized "rain event" that caused a "blowout" just above these rapids, resulting in a major logjam - read the National Forest Service writeup here. Because the river was
impassable, several hundred rafters got stranded just above Pistol Creek Rapids until
dynamite was used to clear the logjam.
Safety Kayaker Dan was rafting the Middle Fork of the Salmon that day, so we pulled over
above them and he told the whole story - way cool to get a first hand experience.
We then scouted the rapids ... so I took my camera gear and setup to shoot the
group as they came through the Pistol Creek Rapids.
I've also included a few other image sequences on this webpage.
