Labor Day is this weekend and is considered the end of summer ... but it's also time to start getting ready for Halloween ... so I have re-enabled commenting on the Halloween Blog. I'll be setting up the halloween decorations in a couple of weeks and expect the halloween decorations webcam online around October 1st. Read about what is new for halloween 2009 and here's a Hulk'in picture of what the display looked like in 2008.

This weekend got pretty busy with family stuff (plus kids are playing Little League baseball today), so I'm a bit behind schedule ... but progress is being made behind the scenes and you will start seeing stuff soon. Not sure if I'm going to have things fully operational by October 1st, but I'm going to try! P.S. Chris: Loaner unit is they may send me a webcam to try for the holidays.

As noted in post #73, we were pretty busy this weekend doing non-halloween family stuff ... but with help from Dirk-n-Kyle, we moved most of the Halloween Decorations from the basement crawlspace to the "scary" room (we really do call it that!) and are ready for deployment. Rest assured that while you don't see too many changes yet (although the Skulls and roof icicle lights are up per webcam snapshot below), I'm working away. For instance, I've taken the Hulk Brothers out of storage and inflated them - "pumped them up!" The older one has a rather nasty leak on the left arm seam that opened up again (must not have been using deodorant?) that will be difficult to patch... and the younger one has a flat right foot. I will be mowing the front lawn tomorrow so I can then start deploying stuff there. Still hoping to have things up (and X10 controllable) by October 1st, but we'll see.

Yep - as mentioned in post #103, I've setup some inflatables in the front lawn - video available here. Today wasn't the best day to do this, since the winds are gusting to 40MPH ... but hopefully the wooden bases and concrete pavers will prevent 'em from moving around too much. I'm not going to have everything ready by tomorrow (full refunds available!), but I do hope to have some stuff X10 controllable and webcam1 may be operational.

Alek replies at 18:22 - A LOT of stuff is not controllable yet ... such as the icicles. As noted, the winds have been howling at 50MPH+ ... should calm down tomorrow with LOTS more to come. Also, that is "Heads-Up Harry! ;-)" Finally, the display wasn't up & running for even 10 minutes before the first neighborhood kid stopped by. Ty lives a few doors down and "has been looking forward to it all year long" ... but asked "where's the Hulk?!?" It's always fun seeing the smile in the kids' faces, especially when I let 'em play with the X10 controller and "battle" people on the Internet for control of my Halloween Decorations! ;-)

Some neighborhood kids were pretty cute tonight. One had a wireless laptop across the street watching the site. The second kid would go "hide" behind the inflatables ... and then the first one would have to "find" them on the webcam - high tech hide-n-go-seek! And talking about a good time, my kids are watching the Colorado Rockies play the LA Dodgers in baseball ... and Kyle comes running in after the Rockies score two runs! ;-)

Yes, the kids did some serious damage to the Haunted Office last night ... but it was all fun - see time-lapse video here. One fun aspect about running this website is the variety of interesting Emails sent my way. Many make me chuckle and some are educational ... such as a delightful note I received from Jules Shepard who shared her gluten-free pumpkin pie recipe. I noticed Bourbon as an ingredient and questioned using Rye Whiskey ... and she pointed out that distilled alcohol (ditto for distilled vinegar which I did know) is actually gluten-free and OK for Celiacs. She has written an entire chapter about this in her book "The First Year: Celiac Disease and Living Gluten Free" and provided this excellent online summary. Remember that non-distilled beverages, such as (non-GF) beer, are not safe. So while my kids are still way too young to be having alcoholic drinks, I thought I'd share that tidbit as I thought Celiacs were limited to mostly wine and Margarita's! ;-)

Alek replies at 17:24 - I've added some additional debugging code to try to track down this very annoying problem that I can't replicate. After an hour+ of heavy X10 "pounding", the CM19 USB controller craps out and has to be pulled out and pushed back in to reset. After that, all works well again.

The Grim Reaper's fan isn't that strong, so today's rain/snow is weighing him - hopefully he will dry out a bit. KFC sent me a bunch of coupons, most of which I've given away for charity, scouts, etc. The $1,000 Grand Prize went direct to Celiac Disease Research. Alek replies at 23:13 - As noted near the bottom of the halloween webcam page, there are just over 7,500 lights for Halloween 2009 drawing almost 30 Amps - i.e. about two hair dryers. Per the math, works out to about ONE dollar a day. So while yes, I notice the increase, it's not as much as many people think it is.

The 9News shot (see blog post #394) aired last night on TV. I had predicted to my wife that I'd probably get 15 seconds of airtime - it was actually 12, plus 22 seconds of archival footage from 2004. Alek right im stuck!!!! What was it you actually done in the christmas hoax that you did i have read the big article dont get big complicated things like that and the tv add was to short :-) in a nutshell what did you do wrong???!!
Alek replies at 17:43 - I didn't do anything wrong. From 2002-2004, the lights were real, but the webcams and X10 control was a simulation - the technology just wasn't there yet. But the media got a bit carried away and it spiraled outa control - all fully documented in my writeup abou The Great Christmas Lights Hoax of 2004. After that, I did it for real - i.e. the webcams and X10 controls have been a 100% real since 2005 (lets just say the media actually did some checking in subsequent years!) as is the almost $40,000 raised for Celiac Disease - also read more at the University of Maryland's website. About 6" of snow this morning and more on the way (notice the white streaks in the pictures below) as a major winter storm hits Colorado. Schools are closed, so needless to say, the kids are excited and the driveway may be used as a sledding hill later today. Alek replies at 14:38 - NO WAY ... only thing that has shut down the show in 5 years was when we had a total city-wide power outage. And since it is grey outside, I'll turn things on an hour early at 5:00PM since you can see the lights. One challenge will be the inflatables as I have to periodically brush off the snow, especially when they go down. So keep the Pumpkins, Grim Reapters, Frankenstein, and Homer inflated tonight!

Have you had any issues with the transformers on the inflatables? When we had ours hooked up to the x10 we burned out 2 transformers in about 2 weeks.

Alek replies at 12:03 - Except for a city-wide power outage a few years ago, the decorations are on every night ... although yea, they struggle a bit in the cold snowy weather ... but it's more fun to battle the elements. But since Frankenstein struggled to "get up" this morning, I brought the inflatables into the garage so the snow could melt and fired 'em up so they would dry out. The fan in the Grim Reaper barely has enough power to fully inflate him so hopefully he'll stand tall tonight ... until someone on the Internet deflates him! ;-)

Since their studio is just a few minutes away from the kids' school, I asked if they wanted to come along, but they would be about 40 minutes late for class. Alek replies at 16:24 - You can't see the lights during the day, and it is supposed to be sunny tomorrow ... so we'll stick with the 5:00 starting time for the X10 controls as it doesn't make much sense to do earlier. Alek replies at 15:09 - It starts getting dark around 6'ish, so I would expect 'em to start trickling in around then - it comes in waves ... and sometimes a tsunami of people all at once! BTW, last year I put out a spotlight so they were easier to see, but I'm not going to do that this year, so you'll have to look carefully after dark.

200+ trick-or-treaters so far ... but starting to slow down as it typically does after 8:00. Good thing, because even though I bought a ton of candy, I'm having to cut back on the monster portions I've been passing out. I think Halloween 2009 is over since there tends to be very few trick-or-treaters after 9:00 and I haven't seen any in a while. My guess is close to 300 people came by in waves plus the occasional tsunami!

I had LOTS of candy so was pretty generous handing out multiple items to each kid ... until near the end when I realized I was running out (D'OH!) ... and ended up having just two bags left. The adults finished off one bottle of Port (dented another), one bottle of Bailey's, most of the Egg Nog whisky, and about half of the Tequila. Super fun time by all ... especially me as I really enjoy seeing all the smiles ... a few pics below.

Massive amounts of web traffic (as typical every year - screenshots here) with 1,373 IM's on the Haunted Office laptop ... interesting enough, just 44 more than last year. And relive the entire crazy evening in a minute via the time-lapse video via Webcam 1 - 2 - 3

I started with a LOT of Candy ... but only had two bags left! ;-)

So I'm finally wrapping things up from all of the craziness Halloween night ... so figure, HEY, lets stay up just a little longer and see what happens when Daylight Savings Times ends. Pretty uneventful on the computers (time just goes back an hour) ... although Windows XP has a minor bug in that if you have the clock up, the time is reset, but it still says Daylight Savings - resets to Standard Time when you restart the app. But one cool thing was the large Atomic clock I have in the Haunted Office. It all of a sudden started auto-advancing at 2:00AM ... 23 hours around to 1:00AM ... kinda cool!
Update: And since time moved "backward", this blog post shows up as earlier than Paul's even though it was actually done a half hour later.

I spent a couple of hours and took everything down outside. Still need to store it away and work on the Haunted Office, but the takedown goes much quicker than the setup. I'll leave the blog open for comments for a few more days, and then we'll call it a wrap for Halloween 2009. And yes, I leave the icicle lights up on the roof for Christmas (that's about all the stays) - gotta save myself a little bit of work!

I just went through the data for 2009 and web surfers from 113 countries visited the site during October/2009. There is a Google Halloween Map showing the geographic distribution of visitors on Halloween night plus a cool daylight overlay. New for 2009 is the use of the nifty markerclusterer package which groups points together for a cleaner look - it's also much faster than in previous year - for example, it takes 15-30 seconds to load the 2008 Halloween Map.

I think we're ready to call Halloween/2009 a wrap ... so I'm turning off blog comments until next September - come back for Halloween/2010. The christmas blog is open for comments and the christmas lights will go up in a few weeks and I hope to have the christmas lights webcam LIVE after Thanksgiving. Here's one last picture of the halloween decorations on my back patio just before I put 'em away. And once last final look of the house, front yard, and haunted office ... which has one scary looking dude in it - BOO! ;-)
