So once again, my neighbors across the street have their Halloween Decorations up before me - D'OH! ;-)
Here's a closeup picture I just took of their pumpkins by the front door - the next two images are from last year. I'm still about a week away from putting stuff out. But I'll probably be pulling THE INCREDIBLE HULK's out of storage the next couple of days and pumping them up to check/repair any leaks.

I love the way you guys in the States put your decorations up for nearly the whole of October, if you did that over here they would be stolen after about a week! by the way Alek, I bought an inflatable Frankenstein yesterday in honour of yours, he's not quite as big (only 1.2m tall) but my two kids love him!!

If the front yard camera is a normal video cable type then it would be easy to tap into that and send the feed to a capture card or USB transfer device and get it to youtube streaming, your server load would NOT be affected and you can pick a low res for lower bandwidth at your ISP. Maybe straight Ethernet would also work since it would be low bandwidth at the house anyway even at 100 bps. Or if you have a extra old camera use that?

Streaming cam would give the site more exposure, lots of Youtube watchers out there, it may make it up on the ratings and then show up on one of their main lists on Youtube for halloween. Also seeing the trick-or-treaters live would be fun. UStream would be good too. I can't believe I had to explain that to you, Mr. Canada. Another feed would be great! Nothing wrong with something new and it's easy enough to do.

In response to various questions:
The MIDI plays on my computer too! ;-)
Don't remember where I got the inflatable pumpkins ... but probably post-Halloween for 50% off!
I'll probably pull the "Dead Guy" out of the crawl space today and put 'em on the front lawn.
The webcams are IP-based ... and everything is setup to upload/display jpegs, so doubt that will change this year. Also, I like the way it currently embeds in the webcam/webcontrol page ... plus no advertisements!

Not suggesting REPLACING the cams or the web page showing pics the way they are, you can simply announce and put a link to the streaming feed. You are already doing a URL request to the cam for the pics, these cams can handle more than one user and request at a time. You could at least try it being a programmer it's not that hard to do. See if you can stream (locally) and also send a pic request maybe from a different computer/IP. Try it on the different models you have. What about a spare extra cam? USB webcam and a laptop? You can turn off any ads on youtube, at least that is what it says, if not then it's a small price to pay for the free bandwidth. I haven't seen an ad on ustream feeds but I do use a blocker.
Alek replies at 16:08 - I appreciate the suggestions, but probably not going to happen this year. There are some other technical (and sociological) reasons why not to stream that I don't want to go into.

One issue was I could not get the browser interface to work with the older Vivotek FD8161 webcam under Windoow7. So in order to get the 32-bit Active-X control to work, I fired up an old laptop running Windows Vista! ;-) I also have an issue with the wireless extender that connects webcam1 to my LAN. Unfortunately, these problems are time-consuming to troubleshoot ... and while the end-user doesn't see any of these "directly", these are just a few of the myrid of things behind the scenes that are critical for things to operate smoothly - sorry it's taking longer than expected.

One big project today is to get the roof icicles working. These are also used at Christmas, so want to have them in tip-top shape to minimize the chance of burnt out sections on the house - much harder to troubeshoot/replace on the roof. About 10% of these burn out every year, so I've been cannibalizing other strongs and the "Magic Gun" is critical to relight strands - see closeup in 2nd picture.

A pretty good thunderstorm rolled in late last night and momentarily knocked out the power to the house. Besides the blinking clocks, all seemed OK ... except (ironically) Frankenstein blew a fuse - I guess the electricity was too much for the monster. The first animated GIF shows how a lightning bolt really lights up the webcam - the second image is what Frankie's fuse looked like. Fortunately, that lower one in the plug is a spare, so it's simply a matter of popping out the blown one, replacing with the good one and ... "IT'S ALIVE!!!"

Alek replies at 13:51 - Yea, I turned on webcam1 so you could see me at work. There's still some inflation issues, so you need to say "Giddy'yup" to the Headless Horseman, but he'll be controllable tonight. There was few other minor adjustments, but the view from webcam1 is pretty much done now.

As you can imagine, going up and down a bazillion times takes its toll on the inflatables. The first composite image is the "back side" of Homer Simpson (click on the image to see his big butt!) showing the tape job. The second picture is the large pumpkin by the sidewalk - you can see the fan inside. I taped this up as good as I could, but this whole section may tear out. Finally, while I was snapping pictures, the third image shows a bug crawling on Frankenstein - D'OH! ;-)

Alek replies at 13:30 - It really is that warm (we have had an incredibly warm Fall - no snow forecast before Halloween) and what you are seeing is the Infrared mode of the webcam - it really does look like snow. Below is an animated GIF showing the camera switching back to "regular" mode as the sun comes up ... and the papers are delivered. Look closely and you'll see a bunny! ;-)

Not working well on slow computer / connection 1fps should be an option, maybe make a page as 1fps.komar.org page is a easy way to do it or cookie based setting (harder to do). Yes not everyone is rich and high speed with new computer every 6 months.

It's time to shut down the Blog and call Halloween/2014 a wrap - Internet surfers from 101 countries stopped by. The christmas blog is open for comments since the christmas lights will go up in a few weeks, and I hope to have the christmas lights webcam LIVE after Thanksgiving.
