It is now less than 2 months before Christmas which is when I re-enable commenting on the Christmas Blog. I usually warmup with halloween decorations and the halloween webcam, but because of various personal reasons - my wife had Breast Cancer (she's recovering well from surgery) and my Dad passed away - I took a break for Halloween/2010. But I'm planning on once again putting out thousands of Christmas Lights along with the zany christmas webcam which should be online by December 1st and maybe by Thanksgiving ... HO-HO-HO! ;-)

You Are VERY Welcome Alek, I LOVE The Santas. I have a Few Bubbler Night Lights and a couple of Light Sets that I run though a Converter... Did You get Much Snow fron The Storm? I Know Loveland Had Quite a Bit
Alek replies at 08:44 - We actually have not gotten any snow yet this year - been very warm & sunny ... which is nice ... but leads to very dry conditions. Had a forest fire in the foothills yesterday that resulted in some evacuations on the end of town, so I've seen the Slurry Bombers (pictures from local papers) flying missions from the house. But not nearly as much smoke as several years ago that came from the Jamestown, Colorado fire ... as the Hulk will attest! ;-)

Alek replies at 14:22 - Still no snow ... and weather forecast is warm and sunny for next week. Cold isn't much of a problem - christmas lights have done fine even down to -25°. Wind is the biggest challenge - below is one of several aftermath pictures from 70 MPH winds in 2008 just before New Years.

Im sorry to read the sad news of the year, but so glad your wife is recovering.. cheers to her!! Alek replies at 06:26 - As mentioned, colder weather is coming in with possible snow, but hopefully will warm up next week when I'll start putting stuff out. There's a ton of prep work to do before stuff shows up on the webcams ... but I'll post pictures/video when it does. For instance, here's what my back concrete patio deck looked like on November 20th, 2009 - mouseover image to see after dark.

You should really get some solar panels and a wind generator. Then you won't be paying any power company. Look on ebay for a thing called a "grid tie inverter" they have a 300W one for about 90 bucks, and you can stack them (don't get a big one, so if one goes bad you still have more). You pump into the grid and the meter runs backwards, then you use it as usual. No batteries and all the mess. You can also show people how easy it is and save the planet!

Webcam1 is installed (at the neighbor's across the street) so I may turn it on periodically when I do some setup - perhaps as early as this week when it warms back up from the snow this morning. Webcam image below as I pick up the newspaper shows the house looking pretty "boring" ... but will be "lit up" soon! ;-)

The weather was fantastic this past weekend and our local Crazy Christmas House started decorating among others in the neighborhood! Made me feel guilty! I just can't bring myself to do it until after Thanksgiving.

Happy Turkey Day to everyone. As some of you have noticed, I'm a bit behind in setting things up, but have had some medical issues in the family, but all looks good now. I have the same Balloon and i put it up again last week and boy it was hard. That same Night the Wind blew like CRAZY and i woke up to a balloon Crash in my front yard. The bad thing is that i got the last balloon on the shelf but it was the display one so i didnt get any instructions on how to tie it down :'( But i put it back up and it working Fine now :)
Alek replies at 17:31 - Wind is the worse enemy of Christmas Lights, especially big inflatables - see blog post #31. Here are some pictures of the 15' Santa Balloon ... basically just find some solid points at the four corners to anchor it down ... and be sure to deflate when the winds picks up and even bungee/strap down the envelope if it's really blowing.

I'm excited to enjoy your lights again this year. I sure wish it was just Christmas lights as the Halloween decorations take away from the Christmas spirit and are really out of place! With 28 minutes before the start of 2010 Christmas Craziness, there's a weather front moving in and it just started to snow ... but also some gusty winds ... so might have to shut down the big inflatables as they really starting to move around. Also, the X10 control system isn't fully debugged yet, so some of the zones may act erratic.

Some stuff has gotten knocked over, but nothing has gotten blown to Kansas ... yet! ;-) Several feet of snow is easy in comparison but may have to cancel the show for tonight if the wind continues to howl ... but weather forecast is for this to blow through and be calm tomorrow - I'll have some repairing to do.

UPDATE: For the first time ever, I'm going to have to cancel the Christmas show tonight - sorry.
Heck, I even had the power go out for a while. Surf back Saturday when we'll be back online.

The Christmas Videos page now has a time-lapse video from webcam1 which is bounced around quite a bit by the wind. You can see me running around bringing stuff inside (that's Elmo in the picture below) and using bunge cords on the various inflatables. Here's a picture of the "morning after" .... could have been much worse, but I had shut down the display, brought what I could inside the garage, and bunge'd everything else - for example look at the Santa Balloon. Still had multiple candy canes knocked down along with most of the figurines (they are staked too) along with the burrito reindeer. As you might expect, the HULK stood up to the wind, but his Santa Hat did come off. Everything should be back in tip-top shape in about an hour ... and yes, the inflatable blow ups will be back in action tonight - cool temps, but no wind - yea!

Yes Luke, Homer's problem is the wire from the fan assembly to the internal bulbs broke. This happened recently on Pumpkin Jack also and requires "Open Fan Surgery" to fix - will do tomorrow. In the meantime, Homer will inflate - just won't light up. I restarted the laptop - sometimes it freezes up. I also had to replace an X10 Super Socket today - you guys broke it - here's the audio of what it sounds like.

Sir Alek, did you have a link for a how to on___ open fan surgery? I thought I saw something on your repairs before. I may need this for my own inflatables someday! Alek replies at 08:14 - Here's a picture from 2007 where I did a "Fan Transplant" ... basically open up the fan and replace the defective components. You can optionally install a larger fan if you need more blowing power, but it is sometimes hard to wedge it in there.

Since this website is titled "Controllable Christmas Lights for Celiac Disease", a brief discussion about the later as it affects my two kids. In summary, the body's auto-immune system reacts against gluten, which is wheat, barley, rye, and (usually) oats ... causing damage to your intestinal system. There is no cure, but if you remove gluten from your diet, you won't be afflicted. But that's not easy as those ingredients are not just in stuff like bread, but trace amounts are in many foods ... plus you have to worry about cross-contamination ... so it's a whole new ball game when it comes to cooking. Fortunately, there are people who can help and one example is Jules Shepards who does gluten-free cooking. She happened to be in Colorado this Fall, and here's a picture of her running a cooking class. That's her gluten-free flour on the counter ... and the results are delicious - I had to fight my kids for the cookies! ;-)

There's a "lights-out" picture in blog post #255 that was just a quick hand-held shot. I took the tripod out recently, and snapped a wide-angle 15 second exposure of the display with better image quality. Yes, everything is OFF except for the red mini-lights in the two bells on the garage. The neighbor still has their Christmas Lights on, so even though it's a moonless night, it casts a decent glow on mine.

There are alot of "kids" using the IM as their own personal chat room to carry on conversations that are most inappropriate for the audience. I like to bring my kids to the sire so they can play with the lights, especially my daughter who has type 1 (insulin dependent) Diabetes, also an autoimmune problem. It is very hard for anyone to enjoy the hard work Alek has out into the site when you have "children" or adults behaving like "children" talking about their sex lives and who they had babies with. Please lets stay on topic so others may enjoy the site and maybe the number of viewers will increase.

Here's a few outtakes from the shot above. The camera is tripod-mounted on the sidewalk across the street with remote flash lighting us up with an intervalometer to auto-shoot pictures every second. So in top-left, I'm dashing across the street after starting the auto-firing. In the top-right, we are all smiling at the camera ... except Dirk who is looking to his left ... and one second later, a car goes zipping and almost looks like we are flattened - D'OH!

Here's a picture of me in Santa's Workshop - a bit crowded/busy! ;-). Picture taken with a Canon 7D DLSR and 17-55 lens ... bummer that webcam3 doesn't have this type of image quality as also seen in the Hi-Def videf of Santa's Workshop. A new addition this year is a "Multi-Color animated LED Light Cube" (above the laptop) from the fine folks at ThinkGeek. While I've made this controllable (of course - zone #2 ;-) by people on the Internet, I'm tempted to just leave it on as it has a 30+ minute display that doesn't repeat and is mesmerizing. My kids loved it and very, very cool!

The lights are seriously fantastic, and so is the technology behind them.. however the web page is a horrific insult to the eyes, I don't know where to look there's so much covering every square centimeter of the page!

Thanks for bringing awareness to Celiacs Disease! My daughter (now 20) was diagnosed when she was 13 years old. Because of my daughters condition we were able to help 4 other friends who were eventually diagnosed with Celiacs. I just went to Home Depot or Lowe's and asked up front if they had anything to fix rips in inflatables and he showed me this little bottle of glue that works for almost any fabric! all i did was i unzipped the balloon and put a piece of cardboard under the rip and over lapped the pieces just a TINY bit and waited a day and It was sealed! its only been a couple of days on the big rip so i will see how it holds. But i would REALLY recommend it if you have any small holes. because about 2 years ago my dog got into my Santa inflatable and she bit about 6 little holes in it and the holes are still Closed today!

However, with the Santa Balloon currently out on the front lawn, it's very difficult to get a flat surface for good adhesion on the fabric ... plus the slightest breeze moves it around, so I'm worried about a solid seal. So I decided to just continue using clear packing tape and I'll try fabric glue after the holiday season as the (hopefully) permanent solution - thanks again Josh!

Alek, on the roof are you just laying 12" sq. stepping stones / pavers up there? Don't they tend to want to slide off? Have any fallen? Like the "ON" one looks ready to go! And are you just sticking thin boards under what looks like wooden shake shingles? That holds OK?
Alek replies at 14:04 - Yes, those are 12" Pavers, but the roof is concrete tiles. The pavers don't move much - only time a few came tumbling down was back in 2008 when we had 70 MPH winds!

Alek replies at 13:55 - Here's a screenshot of the 2010 webcam and we max'ed out at 4,881 ... a little more than the 4,132 in 2008 and 4,291 in 2009. But fairly consistent ... even the fact that the time of those peaks was 7:17, 7:35, and 7:39 in 2008, 2009, and 2010. So yea, it has become a bit of a world-wide Internet Christmas tradition ... HO-HO-HO! ;-)

2010 has been a bit strange weather-wise. While the Colorado mountains and ski areas have been pounded with snow, there has been zippo in town and it will be 50°F and sunny the next couple of days before a major drops in temperatures and possible snow. First, thanks for all the kind words and I've got a few more pictures/videos to post in the next couple of days after which the blog will be shut down shortly after New Years. Yep, all the Christmas Decorations were taken down today and you'll have to wait until around until Thanksgiving/2011 to see and control 'em again ... although Halloween is a warmup. I even had some "helpers" (my sons Dirk and Kyle, plus their friend Brendan) assisting in the front yard as seen in the second picture - we cleared that out in less than an hour - sure wish we could set it up that fast! It was MUCH easier having no snow (although sad) as in years past, some stuff is buried/frozen until March! Check out the time-lapse footage on the Christmas Videos page ... which includes one of the Hulk deflating - D'OH! ;-)

It's another warm and sunny day ... but snow is (finally!) forecast for tomorrow. Unfortunately, the most snow I saw during the 2010 holiday season was the "snow pellets" that had leaked out around the Snow Globe as we were doing the take-down yesterday.

Happy New Year back to everyone else. While I usually only make it to Midnight East Coast time, I actually was able to stay up until Midnight Colorado time this year so got to see 2011 arrive as I kissed my wife. Chris: If not something obvious (like broken wires), then I just cannibalize from other inflatables
James: Probably be too crazy to allow people to pan/zoom the webcam
Russ: there's always a few changes from year to year

Wellll ... the blog made it again to Orthodox Christmas ... but it's time to close it down for this year. Web Surfers from 146 countries visited in 2010 as seen on the Christmas Maps and the total raised for Celiac Disease is now over $50,000 - THANKS! Here's a couple of pictures of the Christmas display ... but no snow since for the first time ever, we didn't see any white fluffy stuff until New Years - sad. Surf on back for Christmas 2011 for more Christmas Craziness - D'OH! ;-)
