HULK beats Obama and Romney on the Halloween webcam.
It was very close ... with quite a bit of ballot stuffing. Fortunately, the Perl scripts were able to detect this ... and after manual verification, those votes were invalidated. In 2008, Obama won with 21,966 votes ... followed by McCain with 21,821 and HULK with 21,692. For 2012, it looks like we are sending a Big Green Monster to the White House as the final tally was:
16,161 - HULK
15,373 - Romney
15,345 - Obama
Congradulations to the Green Party Candidate and I'm sure he'll do a SMASHING job! ;-)

Alek replies at 21:0 - Nothing major for decorations/lights, but did get a loaner webcams for the holidays, so webcam #1 (front of the house) and especially webcam #3 (Santa's Workshop) will be looking nicer. Also, the nice folks at SoftLayer provided an upgrade to the servers so things should run smoother.

Alek replies at 15:42 - Actually, Home Depot sells a 16' Santa ... but no desire to get that since even the 12' one is pretty unwieldy, especially if the wind picks up. But HEY, size matters when it comes to Santa - here's a picture from 2007 of a 20' Santa at a neighbor's house ... they must deflate it when it gets windy.

So I knew some weather was coming in today, but was hoping the freezing drizzle would not happen ... but it did. So it is not safe to climb on the roof and I'm therefore not able to finish settings things up. This means the rest of the webcams and X10 controls will NOT go live tonight as hoped ... but should happen Tuesday as the weather improves. Alek replies at 12:54 - It's a hodge-podge of donated webcams ... which makes the setup/integration more work, but with a bit of bailing wire/duct tape, it all works. Webcam #1 is an AXIS 215, Webcam #2 is a Vivotek FD8362, and Webcam #3 is an IQinVision IQeye IQ33N.

I wish alek would have the cams streaming video instead of these images every 2 seconds it would be better because when you limit something it causes a bottleneck and everyone suffers. The 15' Santa Balloon presents a bit of a challenge, especially when the winds pick up. Unfortunately, one of the four main struts cracked as seen in the pictures below. I backed out the screws slightly, so the piece is staying wedged on ... so far! ;-)

Every year, we hear on the news about all those people who are mostly quite sensible the rest of the year, whose Christmas trees caught fire. Don't become one of them!
Never use lighted candles near trees, boughs, curtains/drapes, or with any potentially flammable item. Stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. If you use an artificial tree, choose one that is tested and labeled as fire-resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. Only use indoor lights indoors. (Look for the UL label.) Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards, but do not run cords under rugs, around furniture legs or across doorways. If using a natural tree, make sure it is well watered to avoid dry branches from catching fire from the heat of light bulbs. Fire extinguishers may seem like overkill, but the ability to quickly tackle a small fire before it gets out of control is a small investment. And make sure they are working, visible and accessible. In the worst-case scenario, if you do have to call the fire department, and if you're a single woman (or a g** man), here's hoping he's single and cute, and, of course, prevents any fire damage. This goes for all couples straight and g** too (just the last part though)! Wishing you all a Safe and Happy Christmas Party!

The webcams don't have the image quality of my Canon DSLR (check out images below and compare to post #156) ... although the IQinVision IQeye IQ33N does pretty well. In fairness, the others are outside (so they are, of course, domed), but the IQeye is still a step up in terms of image quality and is a pretty kick-a** webcam - I really appreciate them loaning it to me for the holidays.

Alek - get yourself some ShoeGoo to repair the damaged balloon strut. Brilliant stuff for mending most things. For a stronger repair embed some fiberglass tape into the ShoeGoo. I've even used it to mend a cracked plastic bath tub! Merry Christmas.

The broken strut (see blog post #140 and 181 for background/pictures) has been replaced! As mentioned, Gemmy sent a replacement strut (two actually ... so I have a backup) and it popped right in - here's the new part versus the old part. Looks like they are using Brass Screws now, although slightly smaller head - it popped right in. Gemmy and Home Depot ROCKS!!!!
Remember this balloon has been used a LOT for 4 years ... and gets inflated/deflated a bazillions times by people around the world. So it's pretty amazing it has held up as well as it has. Here's some pictures of some of the other "damage" - tears have developed in the fabric which reduces the inflation power, but so far the packing tape seems to be holding. And a couple of plastic tabs have broken off on the top. Incidentally, check out the sky behind that last picture - weather is moving in tonight!

Sadly No snow here ;(! Normal snow fall for us in Rochester NY is 10" YTD but we only seen .08" so far BUT it beats last years .03" of snow...lol! One of the X10 Super Socket blew out last night - specifically, zone #4 on the outside panel at 21:52:53 when it went ON,
but never went OFF - check out the footage in

- I had to unplug after show close at 10:00 as even the auto-shutdown
sequence didn't turn it off.
Per the Circuit layout/electrical analysis diagram at the bottom of the webcam page, this provides power and
control to the Upper Roof Icicles, Purple Orbs, Column/Bubble Lights,
SnowGlobe, LED Tree, Penguin, Bells, and Santa Heli - a total of 11.0 Amps and 3,300 lights.
I used up the last of my extension cords and Appliance Modules to
jury-rig a fix ... but had to unplug half of the icicle lights and the Bells
since they can't carry as much Amperage.
I hope to replace the Super Socket tomorrow.

Yea, we got a surprise dusting of about a 1/2" of very light fluffy snow. The HULK doesn't look too happy about the cold temperatures, but there were at least some critters walking around as seen by their footsteps in the driveway.

plugs into an outlets and monitors the powerline for any X10 signals. It shows you the
X10 signal strength, noise levels, commands sent, and other misc. A fantastic must-have
debugging tool for ensuring that X10 works properly ... plus Jeff Volp (the dude that makes 'em)

Alek replies at 20:01 - The 15' balloon is a ... challenge - there are just a host of issues with something that size. So yes, when the wind is blowing, it will certainly lean in that direction. Sometimes the ropes get stuck in the nearby bushes and prevent it from going all the way up. And the fabric (after 4 years of heavy use) has a bit of packing tape applied to it on tears. But in this case, one of those ropes had just come loose ... so it wasn't pulling as well as it should - seems to be working a lot better now.

While people around the world (146 countries last year) enjoy seeing the lights ON, environmentalists will be happy to know that they can turn the lights OFF with a click of the mouse. Better yet, this is the 8th year I'm using Wind Power and even though that is "clean" energy, I do a Carbon Offset contribution for the half Ton of CO2 generated by the about one MegaWatt-Hour of power consumed - that's about the same as a single cross-country airline trip. Finally, by providing online viewing via webcam, you don't need to burn fossil fuels by driving around to see Christmas lights ... Al Gore would be proud! ;-)

Alek, do you think you could take some pictures with everything turned on in zone 1, everything turned on in zone 2, etc... to give us visual reference to what is on what zone. (Rather than guessing what a item is called and looking it up on the circuit layout.)

Total snow accumulation isn't supposed to be more than 6" ... and then it is supposed to start to warm up ... so yea, we'll probably need another wave of snow for a White Christmas. What's with the broom sweeping?

Here's a picture (150 second exposure at F/5 and ISO 100) of the Christmas Display after it was shut down for the last time. If you look closely, you can see star trails in the sky despite the brightness of the full moon. Mouseover the image to see two cars drive by during earlier long exposure.
